Cable repair

Garage door cables work directly with your springs to lift and lower your door safely. When cables fray, snap, or slip off their drums, the door can become crooked, stuck, or dangerous to operate. Gold Star Garage Doors provides fast, professional cable repair and replacement across Davenport, FL to get your system safely back on track.

Overview

A garage door cable works alongside the spring system to hold the door’s weight and keep it moving evenly. Over time, constant friction and humidity can cause cable strands to fray, rust, or slip off the drums—leaving your door crooked, jammed, or completely stuck.

Cable repair and re-alignment should never be attempted as a DIY project. Because cables are connected directly to high-tension springs, snapping or improperly releasing a cable can cause the door to crash down or lead to severe injury. Gold Star Garage Doors safely unloads the system tension, replaces worn or broken cables, and ensures your door is perfectly balanced before we finish.

Warning signs

When to call

The door sits crooked

One cable has lost tension or jumped its drum, so one side of the door is carrying weight the other is not. Every cycle pulls it further out of square, and a door far enough out of square jams in its tracks — or comes out of them.

A cable hanging loose

A slack cable has come off its drum grooves. Do not run the door: with no tension on that side, the next cycle can stack the cable behind the drum or drop the door out of level. Leave it where it is and call.

Fraying near the bottom bracket

Water and debris gather near the bottom bracket, making it the most common spot for cables to rust and strand apart. Since cables bear heavy tension whenever the door moves, a frayed cable can snap without warning and should be replaced right away.

Binding on one side

Uneven cable tension drags one side's rollers against the track while the other side runs free. It reads as a roller or track problem, but if the door is also slightly out of level, the cables are where to look.

Our process

How the visit goes

  1. Secure and unload the door

Before replacing any cables, we clamp the door in its tracks and safely release the spring tension with winding bars. Taking the time to properly depressurize the system keeps the work safe and protects your garage from damage.

  2. Replace both cables

Cables work as a pair and experience identical wear. If one has frayed, snapped, or jumped off the drum, the second cable is just as old and carrying the same strain—so we replace both to save you a second service call!

  3. Re-seat and balance the drums

We carefully thread the cables onto the winding drums and adjust the side-to-side tension. Equal tension across both cables ensures the door lifts smoothly, stays level, and doesn't pull to one side.

  4. Level and safety test

We level the bottom section, test full opening and closing cycles, and inspect the door's tracking. A perfectly squared door runs significantly quieter and prevents premature wear on your tracks and rollers.

Cable repair questions

Answers before you book.

More questions on our full FAQ page.

How much does garage door cable repair cost?

We provide an upfront, flat-rate quote before any work begins. Our price covers replacing both cables as a set—replacing only one side leaves your system unbalanced, so we always service both to ensure long-term safety and reliability.

How long does cable repair take?

In most cases, cable repairs take about an hour. This includes safely unloading spring tension, installing new cables on both sides, re-tensioning the drums, and making sure the door is perfectly level.

Why did my garage door cable jump off the drum?

Cables usually jump off their drums when tension is suddenly lost. This commonly happens if the door closes onto an object, gets caught on a track, or if a spring breaks. Once a cable comes loose, it rarely winds back into its grooves correctly on its own and requires a proper reset.

Can I re-seat a slipped garage door cable myself?

No—and this is a critical safety warning. Cables operate under extreme tension from the springs, and the bottom brackets they attach to are highly dangerous to handle without professional tools. Re-seating a cable safely requires fully unloading the spring tension first, which should always be handled by an experienced technician.
