Newly aligned garage door track and quiet rollers

Overview

Worn rollers can cause squeaking, grinding, or rattling as the door moves along the track. Replacing older steel rollers with quality nylon rollers can reduce noise and provide smoother operation.

We also inspect the tracks for bends, gaps, or alignment problems. New rollers will not solve an issue with damaged or misaligned tracks, so we address the underlying problem rather than replacing parts that are still working properly.

Warning signs

When to call

Loud rumbling during operation

Worn steel-on-steel rollers transfer every bit of vibration straight into your home's framing—making your garage door extra noisy for living spaces above. Swapping old metal rollers for high-grade nylon rollers significantly quiets your system and eliminates rhythmic thumping.

The door binds or catches in one spot

If your door sticks at the exact same spot every time, a bent track or misaligned bracket is snagging the rollers. Forcing the motor to push past a bind wears down your rollers and strains your opener—fixing the track alignment prevents costly motor damage down the line.

Visible wobble in the rollers

When roller bearings wear out, the wheels wobble on their stems and ride crooked inside the track. Wobbling rollers are a direct precursor to a door jumping off its tracks entirely. Replacing worn rollers early is a quick, inexpensive fix that keeps your door running safely.

Bent or bumped tracks

Accidentally bumping a track with a car mirror or storage bin creates a kink that forces your door out of alignment. Over time, running rollers across a bent track can pop the door completely out of its frame. Having bent tracks realigned or replaced right away prevents an emergency off-track scenario.

Our process

How the visit goes

  1. Inspect rollers and track

Every roller gets checked for wear and wobble, and the track for dents, alignment, and bracket tightness. The point is to find what caused the noise or the binding, not just to swap parts near it.

  2. Realign or replace damaged track

Minor track bends are carefully realigned back to specification. If a section of track is sharply kinked or creased, we replace that damaged piece—creased steel permanently loses its strength and will continue catching rollers if left in place.

  3. Install heavy-duty nylon rollers

We swap out old, noisy steel wheels for high-grade, sealed-bearing nylon rollers, replacing them one hinge at a time to keep the door safely secured in its track. Nylon rollers operate drastically quieter and resist wear far longer than standard metal rollers.

  4. Align hardware and apply professional lubricant

We make sure both tracks are straight, parallel, and properly spaced from your door panels. Then, we apply high-grade lubricant directly to the moving hinges and roller bearings while keeping the tracks dry to prevent debris accumulation.

Roller & track questions

Answers before you book.

More questions on our full FAQ page.

How much does roller and track work cost?

Flat rate, quoted before we start. A full set of rollers is one of the least expensive jobs on the whole door, which is part of why it is such good value against the noise it removes.

How long does it take?

Under an hour for a roller swap and alignment on most doors. Replacing a section of track adds a little, but it is still comfortably a same-visit job.

What is actually better about nylon rollers?

The nylon tire deadens the steel-on-steel contact that makes the noise, and the sealed ball bearings keep rolling smoothly without the frequent lubrication open steel bearings need. Builder-grade doors often ship with plastic-bushing rollers that have no bearings at all, which is why they get loud within a few years.

Can I replace the rollers myself?

The rollers along the middle of a closed door, carefully, one hinge at a time — yes. The bottom rollers, no: they sit in the bottom brackets, which anchor the lift cables and are under the springs' full tension. That is the line — hinges and mid rollers are hardware, the bottom brackets are a loaded system.
