Technician installing a quiet residential garage door opener

Overview

An opener that struggles, reverses, or stops partway through the cycle may be responding to a problem with the door itself. Springs, rollers, tracks, and other components can make the door harder to move, putting extra strain on the opener.

That’s why we check the door’s balance before replacing or repairing the opener. If the door does not stay in place when lifted halfway by hand, we’ll identify the underlying issue first so you are not replacing an opener that is still working properly.

Warning signs

When to call

The motor runs but nothing moves

This usually means a stripped main drive gear inside the unit, or the emergency release cord was pulled, disconnecting the trolley. If it's just the release cord, it’s an easy fix—if it’s the gear, we can replace the internal parts without replacing the entire opener.

Remotes stopped working

If your wall console still operates the door, the opener motor itself is fine. The issue is on the signal side—often a dead battery, a lost signal after a power surge, or even interference from certain LED light bulbs. If neither the remote nor the wall button responds, the issue is with the main unit or circuit board.

The door reverses immediately

When a door starts down and reverses, the opener detects an obstruction. This is usually caused by misaligned safety sensors or an over-sensitive travel limit setting. Both can be recalibrated safely so your door closes securely without bypassing important safety features.

Grinding noise from the unit

Grinding sounds typically indicate a wearing drive gear or a loose chain/belt riding against the sprocket. Caught early, this is a simple gear replacement and tune-up. Ignoring it can damage the motor shaft itself, turning a low-cost repair into a full unit replacement.

Our process

How the visit goes

  1. Test the door balance first

Before touching the motor, we disconnect the opener and lift the door manually. Openers are designed to guide a balanced door, not lift dead weight—if the door feels heavy or slams down, the issue is actually your springs, not the opener.

  2. Inspect the drive gears and motors

We open the motor housing to check the drive gear, sprocket, chain or belt tension, and trolley. Stripped internal gears are the most common mechanical breakdown, and we can easily repair them without replacing your entire motor.

  3. Align sensors and test safety features

We clean and align the photo-eye sensors, then test your opener’s travel limits and automatic safety reverse mechanism. We test every door against official industry safety standards to ensure it stops and reverses if something blocks its path.

  4. Provide an honest recommendation

If internal parts, circuit boards, or sensors can fix the issue, we repair them on the spot. If your opener is outdated, severely damaged, or lacks modern safety features, we’ll explain your options and recommend a reliable replacement.

How much does garage door opener repair cost?

We provide an upfront, flat-rate quote right after our initial diagnosis. Minor fixes like a gear kit or sensor realigning cost a fraction of a new unit, and we'll always be honest with you if an old opener isn't worth saving.

How long does an opener repair take?

Most repairs take under an hour. If you do end up needing a complete replacement, installing the new motor, mounting the rail, wiring sensors, and safety testing takes about two to three hours.

My opener shuts off, then works again 10 minutes later. What’s going on?

Your motor is overheating and triggering its thermal protection switch. This almost always happens when the opener is struggling to lift a heavy, unbalanced door. Once the springs are rebalanced, the motor stops straining and the issue goes away.

Should I just turn up the force limits if my door keeps reversing?

No. The force limit is what stops the door from crushing an object, car, or person. Cranking up the force forces the door down without fixing the underlying track friction or spring imbalance, which creates a serious safety hazard.
