Keypads & remotes

A garage door remote or keypad that stops working may need a simple battery or reprogramming, but older openers can have receiver or security issues. Gold Star Garage Doors provides keypad and remote service in Davenport, FL including programming, pairing, and receiver replacement when needed.

Newly installed exterior garage door keypad

Overview

Remote and keypad problems can come from a dead battery, a lost connection after a power outage, or an older opener that is no longer receiving the signal properly. We test the system to determine what is actually causing the problem before recommending a replacement.

Older garage door openers may also use outdated fixed-code technology that does not provide the same security as newer rolling-code systems. If your opener is outdated, Gold Star Garage Doors can explain your options for upgrading the receiver and improving the security of your garage door.

Warning signs

When to call

A remote that won’t pair

Check the battery first—that solves it more often than you'd think! Beyond that, receivers can lose their memory after a power outage, or suffer signal interference from certain LED lightbulbs in the garage that block the remote's range.

Adding an exterior keypad

A wireless exterior keypad gives your whole family easy garage access without needing a remote in every vehicle or hiding a house key outside. It’s one of the simplest, most convenient upgrades you can make to your home.

Clearing lost or stolen remotes

A misplaced remote is a security risk until your opener’s memory is reset. We can quickly wipe the receiver's memory and re-pair only the remotes currently in your possession to keep your home fully secure.

Upgrading to smartphone control

Many modern openers feature built-in Wi-Fi for smartphone control, while older models can often be upgraded with a smart hub. We can inspect your opener's model and age to let you know the best way to add app access.

Our process

How the visit goes

  1. Verify opener compatibility

Garage door openers use specific frequency signals depending on their brand and age. We check your motor's exact system specs first so you avoid wasting money on "universal" remotes that constantly disconnect or fail to pair.

  2. Supply matching devices

We supply original manufacturer or fully certified remotes and keypads designed for your specific opener. Matching the exact system guarantees a stable signal that pairs effortlessly and stays connected.

  3. Program & pair

We program your new remotes directly to the unit and program your keypad with a custom PIN of your choice. Then, we test every device right from your driveway to ensure strong, reliable signal range.

  4. Clear old codes

If you’ve lost a remote or recently bought the home, we clear the opener’s receiver memory before syncing your active devices. This instantly deactivates old or missing remotes so no unauthorized person can open your garage.

Keypads & remotes questions

Answers before you book.

More questions on our full FAQ page.

How much does keypad or remote programming cost?

We provide an upfront, flat-rate price before starting, which includes the new remotes or keypads if we supply them. If our technician finds that your issue is simply a dead battery, we’ll tell you right away—no unnecessary upsells or sales pitches.

How long does it take?

Programming usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. That includes checking system compatibility, pairing your new devices, setting your custom keypad PIN, testing range from your driveway, and clearing out old receiver memory.

What is a “rolling code” and why does it matter?

A rolling code changes the security signal every single time you press your remote, preventing neighbors or intruders from intercepting your signal. It’s been standard technology since the mid-1990s, and it's why having a device properly matched to your opener's exact brand and era is so important.

We just bought a new house—what should we do with the garage door?

We strongly recommend wiping the opener’s memory, reprogramming your active remotes, and setting a fresh keypad PIN. Until you clear the unit, any misplaced remote or old keypad code from previous owners or contractors can still open your home.
